ok so i actually LOVE Alpha/Beta stuff so im going to try to explain what I personally really dig about it. take into account that other people’s mileage my vary on this though.
this got really long lol….so like….scroll to the bottom for tl;dr
so because im fucking badkink trash a LOT (like…a LOT) of my kinks all come back to noncon/powerplay, and Omega verse does a pretty god job of fulfilling this actually! even when it’s not explicitly noncon. I feel like a big part of ABO stuff is the intrinsic power dynamics. and socially enforced power dynamics at that. Alpha’s always have a sort of “power” over Omega’s just by virtue of them being Alphas. And even if its a fairly common trope for the Omega to have a sort of leverage or power over the Alpha because of the affection the Alpha’s have for them this still only exists as a sort of “soft power” (think the kind of power women are said to have over men). combined with the fact that another really common trope in ABO verses is the “heat” that the Omegas go into which always implies at least a slight bit of dubcon….
i think you get where im going with this.
and like….i have reached badkink nirvana already. I realized pretty early on into m sexual development that it was the really fucked up shit that i was reading which was giving me a “funny feeling down there”. and because of that ive had a lot of time to analyse that and accept it! but i dont think that everyone has so for some people i think ABO stuff is a way for them to enjoy these problematic power dynamics without a lot of the feeling of guilt that many people have for liking that kind of thing.
the next thing i really dig about ABO verse is the animalistic aspect of it. Again, for me a lot of it has to do with the power dynamics common to a lot of animal behaviors. especially wolves! (even though we now know that a lot of those common ideas about the Alpha/Omega pack dynamics is based on bad research and not actually true. but its still a trope.) That and probably the fact that i watched WAY too much animal planet as a child lol (Im sure you understand). again, going back to the noncon thing and the guilt, i feel like this animalistic aspect of the ABO verse also helps people absolve themselves of this guilt. “rape” happens in the animal world. this is a thing! but animals dont really have a concept of rape and once they get past the initial discomfort most animals arent going to have long lasting mental trauma. (like…there are a few animals that i can name off the top of my head that reproduce almost exclusively through “rape” i think?) So when the noncon aspects come into play in ABO verse i think it helps people think that its not a RAPE thing its just an ANIMAL thing. no harm done the Omega still falls in love in the end blah blah blah. Another thing about this animal aspect that ISN’T related to noncon is that its basically soft core furry. so people who dont want to go FULL furry but still also watched too much animal planet as children can enjoy this part of it without feeling guilty or embarrassed because its still people not furriers!
another trope is also the knotting/mates thing thats so common in ABO stuff. The mates thing i think is pretty easy to understand. a lot of people like the idea of having that one person who you’re meant to be with! the person who was MADE for you! its like the regular vanilla soul-mates except SEXIER because it has that animal/biological aspect. Especially when its pretty common for Alphas to be shown taking care of thier mates. for people who identify with the Omegas its probably nice imagining someone big and strong who loves you taking care of and protecting you. I relate mates to knotting because, besides just being hot because its a cool sex thing humans dont have, theres the sense of closeness that comes with knotting. its intimate. with knotting you’re physically stuck close together but also emotionally.
and last but not least….MPREG. we all know about mpreg. its THAT kink. Its THAT yaoi trope, the one so many people make fun of 12 year old girls for liking. but i fucking LOVE mpreg and im not eve close to sorry and ABO verse stuff creates a space where that kink is much less stigmatized, even if its just the implications of MPREG.
TL;DR
- there are lots of noncon/powerplay aspects associated with ABO but they are subtle enough that a lot of people can avoid feeling guilty for liking it.
- the animalistic aspects also absolve people of these feelings of guilt about the previously stated nc/pp as well as serve as furry light edition ™ for people who dont want to go full furry
- some people are really comforted by the ideas of mates and being taken care of and protected, and even the kinky knotting affords a sense of intamacy
- socially acceptable MPREG is fucking hard to come by and Omega verse delivers.
all of these aspects are good on their own but together they make a perfect soup!
like i said though, this is just what I get from it and other people might be really attracted to aspects that i haven’t though about or think that some of my points are bullshit! but i actually think that ABO is pretty fascinating fanfiction trope and i love analyzing it!
