Whenever I go through a checkout I make sure to compliment the person serving me on something they’ve chosen about themselves. Like, I’ll say their eyeliner looks incredible, or their eyebrows are glorious, their moustache is glorious, their hair is amazing, or I love their top. Always something.

Cashiers, serving people, receptionists, pharmacists. Everyone who works with customers. Before I was disabled I had been in sales, and customer service, and a cashier, and fast food. I know how much small kindnesses can mean.

There is a girl with a lot of self harm scars at the drive thru I go to for green tea. I can see in her face how much it means to her for me to say a small nice thing. I have been that girl before. I have had small positive things in my day stop me from hurting myself.

It is not hard to be kind.
