it’s not the ‘justice system’; it’s the carceral system. they’re not ‘crimes’ or ‘(criminal) offenses’; they’re criminalized behaviors. they’re not ‘correctional facilities’; they’re prisons. they’re not ‘inmates’ or ‘prisoners’; they’re imprisoned or, better, incarcerated people.

it’s not hard to avoid euphemizing the carceral system and obscuring or tacitly espousing the systemic oppression it upholds–especially racism, classism, and heterosexism. we should all be changing the ways we talk about this.
