discourse-hell:

the lgbt community isnt a community in the way many people on tumblr seem to think it is. it’s not about “acceptance” or sugar-coated positivity and uwu posts; yes, the online community is very important, especially for people who cannot be/are not active in rl lgbt communities, but the main point of the lgbt community existing, either irl or online, is to fight against the systems of power that uphold homophobia and transphobia

historically the lgbt community didnt even exist until a coalition formed between loosely-connected ppl who experience similar forms of oppression in our society. its most important goal is to dismantle the power structures which uphold homophobia and transphobia along with providing real, tangible aid to vulnerable lgbt people in the form of education, homeless shelters, hiv testing, etc.

these are the pivotal reasons why we need a community. its because we are systemically discriminated against and even murdered at the hands of the us government (aids crisis). there are oppressive structures that cishet people benefit from, and to ignore that is to ignore the history of why the lgbt community was founded in the first place

tl;dr: the lgbt community is not about acceptance or embracing “nontraditional” identities. its about fighting against oppression and helping struggling lgbt individuals
