people can cosplay whatever they want but tbh if you’re thin and cosplaying rose quartz i’m gonna be side-eyeing tf outta you

How to be a slimeball about people expressing innocent love for something.

No. It’s not being a “slimeball” to say that thin people should consider their decision in cosplaying a plus sized character, when there are NEXT TO NONE in media, especially media that cosplayers draw from. Plus sized cosplayers are ridiculed often for cosplaying thin characters, and I don’t think thin people should take away the characters that the bigger cosplayers can proudly and extra-beautifully cosplay with a canon body type. Steven Universe has been an amazing show for body type diversity and visibility, it has made so many people more comfortable with their bodies– why would we want to ruin that?

This is coming from a petite cosplayer, btw. For example, I adore Amethyst, but I would never cosplay her because I want people with her body type to be able to cosplay characters that look like them without being made to feel like shit by thin people cosplaying plus sized/curvy characters.

tbh I strongly disagree with this mindset. the idea should be to let ANYONE Cosplay ANY CHARACTER THEY WANT, regardless of size or race. obviously you can’t do things like wear a fat suit or blackface, but besides that there’s no real harm.

what I see happening with this is that if people are saying that only plus sized cosplayers can Cosplay plus sized characters, than it’ll just give fat shamer’s more ammunition when a plus sized cosplayer tries to Cosplay a thin character, because then they can say “oh well you should just Cosplay one of the (like…5) overweight characters, since people should just Cosplay within their own size range.”

cosplaying is about fun and about bring able to emulate a character or design that you love. it doesn’t always have to be accurate. and I don’t see how thin people cosplaying Rose would make it so that thicker people couldn’t? it’s not like there’s a limit, only x number of people are allowed to Cosplay this character.

I would suspect that the majority of people would give more attention to a beautifully constructed rose Cosplay on someone closer to her body size than a costume of the same quality on someone thin anyway, since it’s closer to canon. of course a few fat shaming assholes wouldn’t but these people would be in the minority.

I def. see where you’re coming from, and there certainly needs to be more plus sized characters in the media, not just for cosplayers but just for thicker people to be able to identify with on a whole, but I honestly think gate keeping and trying to shame thin people who just want to Cosplay a character is not the answer.
