What you say: You cant say [insert word here] because its AAVE and thats CULTURAL APPROPRIATION!!!1 !! !
What I hear: I have no idea how cultural appropriation or language acquisition actually works
okay lol but aave isn’t ‘slang’, it’s it’s own dialect
and even if it wasn’t cultural appropriation, i don’t fucking appreciate non black people calling me and other black people stupid for speaking it, us getting embarrassed in front of people when others try to ‘correct’ us, black people not being able to get jobs because of aave
only for non black people to start using bits and pieces of aave (and use it wrong, it’s a dialect with grammar rules) for the cool factor so they can all have a good laugh and move on
fuck this post honestly
edit: also you’re white as fuck??? what makes you think you have the right to make this stupid post anyway?
wow haha you’re really bad at reading comprehension.
Terrible job! You get an F!I never said AAVE isn’t a dialect. But guess what? Dialects include slang! Shocker! And where the fuck in my post did I say calling people stupid for using AAVE is ok?
This post literally has nothing to do with using AAVE “for the cool factor” or “for a laugh and move on”???? People hear words being used and then they adopt them into their own vocabulary that’s how language WORKS. Attacking people because of words they’ve naturally adopted into their own vocabulary is fucking stupid.
And you know what else is stupid? Attacking people who you don’t fucking know because you have no idea what their post is even talking about.
P.S. I’m fucking Hispanic you dumb fuck. Both of my parents are immigrants, English wasn’t even my first language but good job jumping to even more conclusions and completely disregarding the cultural background of a complete stranger!
in conclusion: go fuck yourself!
Anyway.
Listen, if you’re not black hispanic, you literally don’t get a fucking opinion on what is and is not cultural appropriation of AAVE, how simple is that to understand. So you’re white passing. And? You didn’t give any indicator that you’re black, what the hell do you expect me to think? Even if you are black, it’s still really shitty for you to trivialize this and make it seem like no big deal.
That’s not the damn point…Yeah, people adopt words they hear because they think it’s cool or they hear black people using it and think “I want to go for a certain look/sound here, let me talk like this”.
The problem comes when non black people are told ‘hey don’t fucking say this, this isn’t for you’ and then they get pissy and refuse to stop using it, making posts like yours, which make black people who are upset about non black people using AAVE sound ridiculous. This is a microaggression at best, classic anti blackness at worst.
I honestly couldn’t give a rat’s ass about you being hispanic or your parents being immigrants in this context, if you’re not black, you’re complicit in anti blackness, too. I hope you realize that lots of non black hispanic/latinx people are super anti black. I would think someone who ‘fights for equality’ would realize this and be conscious of it.
If you’re really gonna consider yourself someone who is for ‘equality’ then you need to learn about anti blackness and you need to call that out specifically. Cuz honestly, this post is fucking passive aggressive as hell and has a lot of anti black undertones and you need to be conscious of that.
Listen. Thats not how the world works. You cant just decide that black people are the ONLY people who get an opinion on what cultural appropriation is. While black people certainly experience racism and the appropriation of their culture firsthand and therefore have a viewpoint that would make them much more attuned to when this is occurring you are NOT the only people who are allowed to take part in this discussion. I may not know what its like to experience of the cultural appropriation of black culture specifically but I am familiar with other sorts of cultural appropriation that allow me to notice it when its present.
Besides. Whether I gave any indicator or not as to what my race is should not matter. Thats not the point. The point is that you cannot brush off other people’s opinions and make judgments about them when you literally know NOTHING about them.
Im not going to argue that hispanic people can’t be anti-black. They certainly can be, just like TONS of black people are anti-latin@. but again, thats not what i was talking about. I was talking about the fact that you took it upon yourself to ASSUME that I’m fucking white and dont know anything about facing racism just like you took it upon yourself to ASSUME that im not ALREADY knowledgeable about anti-blackness and call that shit out all the fucking time. And ASSUMED AGAIN that i was laughing at the concept of anti-blackness on a whole and not the fucking fact that you think that Im anti black from one post that you clearly have grossly misunderstood anyway. My post wasnt even about black people calling anything out. My post was about the countless nonblack people that ive seen jump people for fucking talking naturally.
Besides,
“ people adopt words they hear because they think it’s cool or they hear black people using it and think “I want to go for a certain look/sound here, let me talk like this”.”
except….no? This literally goes back to my original point. Thats not how language acquisition works. Are you going to try to argue that infants start using the words that they hear because they think it sounds “cool” or because they want to look a certain way? of course not! People from different races start using AAVE the same way other black people start using AAVE. Its a subconscious addition to a society’s vocabulary over time. And what about people from other races that grow up in places where AAVE is the norm and this is the only kind of dialect they know? are you going to tell them that they are not allowed to speak that way? And if not where do we draw the line? how do we define who has grown up with it or not when language is constantly changing and evolving?
You CANNOT restrict the kind of dialog that people have access too. Thats not how humans work. Thats not how language works. Im not talking about specific cases such as in the use of the N word where obviously non black people should not be allowed to use it because of its history as a slur. Im talking about general AAVE and slang terms like “salty” or “bae”.
You said it yourself, AAVE is a DIALECT and because of that it can not be cultural appropriation. Humans are fucking PROGRAMMED to be constantly spreading language and learning new ways to communicate this is biult into our brains its one of the big things that separate us from other animals.
Language CANNOT be isolated or kept in a box. THAT’S NOT HOW LANGUAGE WORKS.
You are not the authority on everything anti black. You are not the authority on cultural appropriation. and you are STILL clearly not the authority on reading comprehensions or language acquisition. Seriously dude, read up on how people ACTUALLY learn how to speak before you start yelling at a stranger on a post about how people learn to speak.
