That’s because 4chan is capable of actual activism and quashing misinformation and getting things done for their causes instead of sitting around on their fucking computers and complaining about shit they know absolutely nothing about.
ok ive seen this argument going around a bit and ive refrained from speaking about it but im a bit annoyed so heres my opinion.
Yes. 4chan has done some nice things. and these things should be acknowledged! but at the same time 4chan is a cesspool that runs rampant with misogyny and racism and has ENCOURAGED PEOPLE TO LIVESTREAM THEIR SUICIDE and tells people to CUT THEMSELVES ON CAMERA. and its done these sorts of things more than once! this is NOT uncommon behavior on that site. done by thousands of users. consistently.
that pet fox did not deserve to die. and the owner did not deserve to be put through that. I’m acknowledging that right now. but these were the actions of ONE anonymous user and i would say that it IS unusual for that sort of thing to happen.
Tumblr is not perfect. im not saying that. yes there are MANY problematic things that happen on the site but FOR THE MOST PART i still believe this site is better than 4chan and has come together to help people fairly often.
4chan is filled with disgusting behavior and the fact that 4chan doesn’t hide this does NOT change the fact that this behavior is encouraged. how can you honestly use “yeah its terrible but at least it ADMITS it” as an excuse for this behavior?
As i said before, tumblr has its problems. but this is a site used by THOUSANDS of people so of course SOME of them are going to be shitty or do shitty things at times! but when they do i have CONSISTENTLY seen other people on the site call out this bad behavior and discourage it!
i would not know as much about sexism, racism, ableism, and transphobia among other things were it not for tumblr. Also we must remember that tumblr is a much younger website! so yes, tumblr may not have had a few of the big flashy “successes” that 4chan has had but to say that it is WORSE than 4chan is absurd and quite frankly offensive as it excuses a lot of the behavior that goes on.
