So this is the state of Rise of the Guardians. Our budget to make the film was 145 million. Opening weekend revenue counts the most because it mostly goes back to the studio. We only made 34 million to date.

Sure this sounds like a lot, but in movie terms it’s bare bones. In comparison, Twilight made more than 40 million in one night.

I’m writing about this because people have asked us why we don’t make sequels to movies they like. Megamind, for example, made back its money, but only turned a 10 million dollar profit. 10 million is not enough for a sequel, as you can see it take 145 million to make.

Rise of the Guardians was absolutely stunning, but I think we’ll be lucky to even make our budget back, let alone turn a profit. We need to make twice as much as our budget in order to even think about making a sequel to tell the stories of all the other characters.

Also, if anyone is wondering why we have Madagascar movies up to wazoo, the third movie made 200 million in the U.S. alone.

So I guess what I’m saying is, if you like something like a movie or a game, support it, or you’ll probably never hear about it again.

If you want more animated movies that are ambitious like ROTG and less movies that are about Afro Circus and fart jokes, voting with your dollar is the only way to help make that happen.

I know movie prices are ridic these days, but if you can see this, you absolutely should! My only significant criticism of ROTG was that there wasn’t enough time to spend on all of the characters as much as I’d have liked, and it’s really sad to see that that’ll probably never happen because there’s now virtually no chance of any sequels.

This is legitimatly bumming me out! When I saw the box office numbers on Monday I seriously had to do a double take because I hadn’t seen numbers like that since Princess and the Frog. I’m going to see this film tomorrow*, please support it if you can!

*I’m not being a total hypocrite here—I’m not claiming that I love the film even before I see it but dammit it’s an original story, we need to support those regardless.
